STEP-BY-STEP SOLVED EXAMPLES
Rounding might seem tricky at first, but following a simple rule makes it easy: look at the ones digit. If it is 5 or greater, round up to the next ten. If it is less than 5, the tens digit stays the same and the ones digit becomes zero.
Example 1: Rounding 91
Look at the number in the ones place, which is 1. Since 1 is less than 5, we round down to the current ten. Therefore, 91 rounded to the nearest ten is 90 .
Example 2: Rounding 35
Look at the ones digit. The number is 5. According to the standard rounding rule, when a number ends in 5, we always round up to the next ten. So, 35 rounded to the nearest ten is 40 .
Example 3: Rounding 59
The ones digit in 59 is 9. Since 9 is greater than 5, we round up to the next ten. Consequently, 59 rounded to the nearest ten becomes 60 .
TEACHER & PARENT TIPS
To help students visualize this concept, use a physical number line. Mark the tens (e.g., 20 and 30) and have the student place the number 28 on the line. They can see it is physically closer to 30 than 20. Another great tip is to use the "Rounding Mountain" analogy: numbers ending in 1-4 are on the uphill side and roll back down to the start, while numbers 5-9 reach the peak and roll forward to the next ten. Encourage students to circle the ones place in every problem before they start rounding to focus their attention on the correct digit.
